Have you ever wanted to learn to dance but thought 'I just can't do that' or 'have two left feet' or 'don't have the rhythm'? We're here to change that and the best thing, to make the process easy and fun! In High Five Salsa we would love to introduce you to the great fun that is cuban salsa (a.k.a. "casino"), in which YOU get to dance, meet new people and get an awesome cardio workout, all in a relaxed, friendly and easy going way!
Casino (or "Cuban Salsa") and Rueda de casino
|
Since its origins, salsa has become so popular that different styles of dancing have emerged from it. Simplifying a lot, we could say that there are two main salsa styles in the UK:
|
When Casino style moves are done by a group in a circle, that formation is referred to as Rueda de casino (wheel of cuban salsa). In "rueda", pairs of dancers form a circle with dance moves called out by one person, "a caller". Many moves involve the swapping of partners, where the leaders move around the circle to the next partner. The combination of the synchronised and constant movement of partners creates a visually spectacular effect. In High Five Salsa we will teach you the main footwork and foundations of casino, as well as many cool moves and the calls to be able to join any social Rueda de casino in the area!
Let's continue killing some myths about salsa and dancing that we have come across:
Myth 1 - Thanks but... I haven't got any rhythm.
You can learn it. Trust us, you really can. Depending on your starting level it might take some time, effort and dedication (and definitely some lots of practice and listening to the right music!!). But it is certainly possible and we are here to give you the tools and guidance to learn how to do it if it does not come naturally to you.
Myth 2 - Thanks but... I've got two left feet.
Nope, you don't (at least anatomically speaking!). And even if you feel like that, we can show you how to make learning and dancing comfortable, at a pace that works for you.
Myth 3 - Thanks but... I need a partner and I don't have one!
Actually you don't need a partner: we have a great mix of people, either coming as couples or coming on their own. Also, and lots of our dancers want to try both to lead and follow which gives us lots of flexibility to try to match our couples and we always try to make make it happen so you don't have to wait to dance with someone during our lessons.
Myth 4 - Thanks but... salsa is too flashy and flamboyant for me
Well, that can be what you'll find if you watch "Strictly come Dancing" or similar. However, our style is focused in social dancing and our view is that you should dance to express, not to impress. The best dances we've had do not tend to have many flashy moves (if any!), instead they are all about connecting to the music and understanding your dance partner, and they are usually relaxed and full of fun!
