Salsa: Casino and Rueda de casinoSalsa has become so popular that different styles have emerged from it. Simplyfing, we could say that there are two main Salsa styles which are danced around the world:
|
When Casino style moves are done by a group in a circle, that formation is referred to as Rueda de casino (wheel of casino). In rueda, pairs of dancers form a circle with dance moves called out by one person, "a caller". Many moves involve the swapping of partners, where the leaders move around the circle to the next partner. The combination of elaborate dance combinations and constant movement of partners creates a visually spectacular effect. In High Five Salsa we will teach you the main footwork, crazy moves and calls to dance Cuban Salsa and Rueda de casino.
High Five Salsa
Hive Five is not only a move in which two people slap each other's palms with their arms raised, but also a gesture of celebration or greeting. That is exactly the attitude we want to encourage dancers to have while dancing away with us.
Don´t worry about making mistakes of having two left feet. Our main aim is to enjoy, celebrate, laugh, and of course... learn some salsa steps and have a good time meeting people and doing some exercise (with the occasional high five here and there to celebrate after a good dance!)
Funnily enough, one of the basic Rueda de casino steps could also be seen as a High Five gesture! ;)
Either way, the best thing to do is to come to one of our classes and high five with your own hands! :)

We love Rueda de Casino. It is so much fun! Actually, if you are an intermediate/advanced RUEDA DE CASINO dancer, you consider yourself to be a quick learner and you are up for a new challenge... we'd like to invite you to join our Rueda Structures workshops!
The Rueda Structures are not so much about learning new rueda moves, but about re-learning these with new rules and new ways of dancing /swaping partners, roles and much more... these structures are literally "reinventing the wheel!"
Now we leave you with some videos of the workshops we have done: RUEDA PA'FUERA, RUEDA MIXTA, LLANTA, TREBOL, RUEDA TORNO, RUEDA CONTRARIO and MUJERES CONTRARIO Thanks to all that took part in them!
And you can also check the ones below with SalsaNor (2017)!

For us, the main thing that a good dancer needs is to be able to enjoy and have the best time dancing away to the music. So our first advice is to listen to lots of Cuban music (from son to timba) to develop your rhythm and musicality (feel free to us for music suggestions anytime!). Very important as well is to learn to laugh at yourself when things go wrong (which definitely will happen, it's just part of the fun and the learning process)!!
In order to progress in your dancing skills you don't need to know many figures. Of course, you need to understand the basic patters, but you also need to understand the musicality, the different instrument roles, explore your body movement and feel comfortable dancing with different partners and adapting to their level (from beginners to advanced). In rueda de casino, on top of knowing the basic movements that are taught in the improver level you need to be able to respond quickly to the move calls, keep up with the speed, to understand the dynamics of the rueda and the different structures (pa'fuera, llanta, contratiempo, contrario, mixta...).
In our lessons, you will to learn to dance cuban salsa first (before you move on to dancing rueda). We believe any type of dance is good and helps you become a better dancer! But if you have danced other types of dancing or salsa (i.e. crossbody) we would recommend you to come to a couple of our foundation lessons to understand the basics of cuban salsa, as althought they might have some thing in common, it is a very different dance!
One of our distinctive aspects is that we both like to lead and follow during the dances. And in High Five Salsa we welcome everyone who wants to try to learn to lead and follow, no matter your gender! Of course, there is no need to learn the other role but if you are up for the challenge, we would really encourage you to learn to dance the second role as we believe it really helps to develop and improve.... and... it can be so much fun!!
